CONSTRUCTION
CLUSTER IN THE
BALEARIC ISLANDS
Home
ConstruLab360 already has representatives from major companies at virtually every stage of the value chain considered, as well as partner organisations representing knowledge generation and transfer.
Context and objectives
The cluster is structured as a grouping of companies and, to a lesser extent, knowledge and technological development centres and institutions that wish to work cooperatively in order to drive a more innovative, technologised and sustainable construction sector in the Balearic Islands.
As such, the following founding objectives have been established from the outset.
To facilitate collaboration between the different stakeholders involved in the construction value chain in the Balearic Islands. ConstruLab360 is a meeting forum where companies, institutions and individuals can come together, share information and work jointly on common projects.
To foster the sector’s competitiveness by enabling the development of synergies between stakeholders across the value chain, new business opportunities and the exchange of knowledge.
To promote knowledge transfer, innovation and technological development. ConstruLab360 will help encourage innovation in the field of construction by sharing expertise, experience and resources from knowledge-generating entities to companies, particularly SMEs.
To collaborate in introducing innovative technologies and production models into the Balearic construction industry, linked to productivity and the circular economy, such as industrialised construction or robotics.
To act as a leading expert technical forum in the definition and deployment of regional strategies relating to construction and its supporting industry. In this context, ConstruLab360 aims to contribute its expertise and participate technically in the definition of policies and strategies at regional and island level.
To facilitate access to funding for collaborative innovation projects through technical office support and the sharing of public and private calls for proposals and investment forums.
To provide visibility to successful stories related to construction that position companies from the Balearic Islands both within and beyond our autonomous community.
To collaborate with other clusters and relevant stakeholders from innovation ecosystems in other territories whose challenges and objectives are aligned with those of ConstruLab360.
In the founders’ view, the best way to structure an association pursuing these aims is through the Innovative Business Grouping model (hereinafter, IGB).
ConstruLab360 was therefore created with the intention of becoming such an entity and, within a reasonably short timeframe, securing its registration in the Register of Innovative Business Groupings of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands (AEIB).
Cluster approach
ConstruLab360 is created to cover the construction value chain in an extended sense, in a similar way to other clusters of a comparable nature and with similar objectives, incorporating the following stakeholders.

The planning, convening, facilitation and monitoring of each Committee’s performance will be the responsibility of the Cluster Manager, who will play a fundamental role in attracting members to the Committees and identifying topics that generate sustained interest among participants.
The number and composition of these Committees will vary as the cluster evolves and will depend, among other factors, on the membership base at any given time, the degree of progress in the implementation of the Strategic Plan, and the level of interest generated by the different topics.
A critical success factor in the consolidation of the cluster will be the active involvement of members in these Committees.
The first working Committees to be launched are:
- Collaborative innovation and projects.
- Institutional and membership development.
- Training and talent.
- Communication and awareness-raising.
In addition to the structures described above, the cluster may also consider establishing others that contribute to improved governance of the IGB, such as, an Advisory Board, Scientific Board or Steering Committee for certain projects.

R&D&I projects
Although ConstruLab360 is still in its early stages, a significant number of R&D&I projects are already under way, both by individual companies and through collaboration between companies from the founding core of the IGB and, in some cases, also involving knowledge-generating organisations such as the UIB, technology centres and even other clusters within the Balearic innovation ecosystem.
This demonstrates the existing capacity within ConstruLab360 to launch innovative projects, which will undoubtedly be extraordinarily strengthened by the cluster dynamic in line with the creation and consolidation of the IGB.
Some relevant examples are:
1. Manufacture of LEGO-type moulds with recycled aggregate (MAC Insular, IGETEC).
Development of modular LEGO-type blocks from mass concrete manufactured with recycled aggregates of 0–8 mm and 8–40 mm. These blocks have been used to build a silo for the separation and storage of aggregates at the Inca plant. This project promotes the use of recycled aggregates obtained from construction and demolition waste recycling in the prefabrication sector, fostering the circular economy.
2. Mortar with recycled aggregate for infrastructure protection (MAC Insular, Pavimentos y Hormigones Carreras).
Research and development of mortars formulated with recycled aggregates, applied to the covering and protection of pipelines. This solution reduces demand for natural aggregate, lowers the carbon footprint of the final product and contributes to closing the life cycle of construction materials.
3. Nivelación de Cunetas y Sistemas de Drenaje Sostenibles (MAC Insular, Consell de Mallorca).
Application of 8/40 mm recycled aggregate in drainage works and roadside ditch levelling, intended for the filling and protection of pipelines. This alternative use of waste promotes more sustainable road infrastructure, reducing the use of raw materials.
4. Upcycling furniture using reclaimed construction timber and reused pallets (MAC Insular, Fundación Deixalles).
Use of timber from construction waste and pallets for furniture manufacturing through social workshops. This initiative not only strengthens the circular economy, but also promotes social inclusion through collaboration with third-sector organisations.
5. Cycle lane and running circuit with recycled aggregate (MAC Insular, Vitrac Obra Pública).
Construction of sports and sustainable mobility infrastructure, such as cycle lanes and running routes, using recycled aggregates in their base and surface. This initiative promotes clean transport and outdoor sport, while giving construction materials a second life once recycled.
6. Reuse of expanded polystyrene material for new production cycles (MAC Insular, PORAXA).
Implementation of a separation and sorting system for expanded polystyrene at MAC Insular’s facilities for its use as a raw material in the manufacture of new expanded polystyrene at the PORAXA plant in Porreres. This process makes it possible to close the material’s life cycle on the island of Mallorca itself, constituting an exemplary model of local circular economy applied to plastic materials.
7. Reuse of sheep’s wool as insulating material (PORAXA, UIB).
8. Technological development of new insulating material with slope formation (PORAXA, technology centre, ConstruLab360 cluster).
9. Technological development of new ecological mortar (UIB, Ladrillerías Mallorquinas and Pavimentos Lloseta).
11. Design and production of 3D moulds for construction material manufacturers (PORAXA, HUGET, JUPE, Riutort).
